Former black star player and the current coach of Great Olympics, Yaw Preko has expressed his displeasure on the timing of this year’s world cup in Qatar.
In an interview on Ahotor sports corner, he emphasized that today’s football has now turned into a business and footballers are treated to adapt to the situation.
” Looking at this world cup, if not because of money issues, why would we play the world cup in November? Football has now turned into a business and they are expecting footballers to adjust the tournament comes with money and the same money is used to fort the bills so you have no choice but to play “
He further expressed that the time given to players to prepare themselves is very limited.
” So as soon as they are back from pre-season, league matches commence, and there is a need to play a lot of league matches before the world cup, before the break and as soon as the break, champion league and it’s like tournament after tournament.”. He said
He went on to say that he already knew that a lot of countries will struggle in the world cup.
” I know that a lot of countries are going to struggle. It’s not like another world cup where the players have the time to rest and even they have two weeks if they have knocks to recover. Or if the season is getting to the end, and the club has already played in a league that is it. No need to rush.”
”If my club is to win the league I know and if my club is out of the relegation zone, I have to wait for it, but this now that we have started now that I’m preparing for matches does not help. Players must have the time to prepare themselves first before playing in any match “
The world cup in Qatar 2022 was scheduled for November and December from the normal June and July world cup seasons.
