The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC) has called on all the parties and institutions involved in the transition process to be committed to the task to ensure its success.
“We look forward to a peaceful, smooth and transparent transfer of power to the incoming government,” it said.
In a statement issued in Accra yesterday, the conference congratulated the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on emerging winner in the presidential election.
“With profound admiration, we also congratulate His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama on such display of mature statesmanship in conceding defeat to the President-elect,” the statement, signed by the President of the GCBC, the Most Rev. Philip Naameh, said.
Stakeholders
It also congratulated the Electoral Commission (EC) on living up to the task and organising very credible, transparent, free and fair elections.
The statement further acknowledged all other stakeholders, such as the National Peace Council, the security agencies, the Judiciary, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations, the media and international observer organisations and communities, for their invaluable contributions to the success of the elections.
It commended Ghanaians for the comportment and maturity they demonstrated during the December 7, 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.
“This, surely, resulted in one of the most peaceful and successful elections we have witnessed as a country, a feat that has made Ghana once again a still brighter beacon of democracy in Africa and the world at large,” it stated.
It said the chorus on the lips of many Ghanaians was: “The outcome of the elections is a victory for Ghana and not just for any particular political party.”
The statement, therefore, urged Ghanaians to rekindle the spirit of national unity and move Ghana forward.
Vandalism
It called on political party supporters who had resorted to vandalising national and private assets and assaulting persons perceived as opponents to desist from those acts of lawlessness.
“We hereby call on the appropriate security agencies to enforce the laws of the land and ensure the safety of life and property of Ghanaians
“It is the prayer of the GCBC that Ghana will continue to enjoy the peace it has enjoyed over the years to make room for the growth and development of our country,” it concluded.
