The Chamber of Agribusiness has urged the government not to neglect the agricultural sector this election year.
According to the Chamber, this could have a dire consequence on inflation since it will affect food inflation.
Speaking in an interview with the media, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chamber, Anthony Morrison said that, government should prioritize the sector.
“ In election year, government looks at certain critical sectors of the economy and the Agricultural sector is normally neglected”.
He indicated that, they look at conspicuous items that informs the decisions of voters like; roads, hospitals, education. He however was quick to mention that, the Agricultural sector is mostly not looked at.
“The Agricultural sector is normally not looked at in election year, because in election year, we see a lot more importation of non-food items and we’re going to see in the coming months how the non food items is going to contribute towards inflation. For instance, the importation of campaign materials, vehicles and several other things and how this is going to have negative influence on food”.
Inflation fell significantly to 26.4% in November 2023 from 35.2% recorded in October 2023.
According to figures from the Ghana Statistical Service, food inflation was the major contributor to the decline in the rate of inflation.
Food inflation dropped by 12.6% to 32.2% in November 2023. The month-on-month rate of food inflation was 0.8%.
