Retired judge of the Supreme Court, William Atuguba has stated the need to appoint judiciary and other governance institutions based on merit rather than protocol, cronyism, ethnicity, or improper considerations.
Speaking at a public lecture dubbed “Protecting our democracy, the role of the Judiciary”. Justice Atuguba stated the importance of these Institutions, particularly the judiciary being shielded from political pressures.
He emphasizes the necessity of conducting a realistic audit and restructuring of not only the judiciary but all governmental Institutions.
He also reiterated that the powers bestowed on the Executive, the president, and his functionaries must be drastically curtailed.
There must be a clear separation of Parliament from the Executive branch. The emphasis should be on good and sincere governance in the interest of the people and not over-exaggerated notions of electoral conferment of power on anybody or a group of persons.
Justice Atuguba used the medium to congratulate some citizens like Prof. Ransford Gyampo of University of Ghana, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, Kwame Pianim, Kwesi Pratt, Prof. Agyemang Duah of Center for Democratic Development (CDD) Kelvin Taylor of the USA and others that he said, “he has followed their work on social media and he is impressed” and urged them to remain nationalistic no matter the regime in power.
