It’s long overdue for the Volta River Authority (VRA) National Disaster Development Organisation (NADMO) and Ghana Irrigation Authority to redefine their protocols governing communities, towns, and settlers along the Volta Lake to control the disaster which affects over 2,500 people still counting as a result of spillage from Volta and Kpong dam.
The situation has reached a level that in my opinion can be described as a national disaster, since houses, schools, hospitals, and farmlands are underwater. There is a need for the government to declare a state of emergency to address the problem head-on to keep lives in these critical times for the people and residents downstream of Volta Lake.
The Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress discloses this on Adekyee Mu Nsem’s morning show on Ahotor FM 92.3 in Accra.
He said the heartbreaking issues that occurred over the weekend is to call on the families and community to come to the Comboni Hospital which is been taken by the water, unfortunately, the mortuary was flooded by the spillage; and has about three hundred dead bodies have to be released to forestall any outbreak of epidemic.
He mentioned that, people living in Aflo, Keta, Ketu South, and Anlo which have just suffered in the recent past as a result of the destruction from the strong tidal waves are been affected again by the spillage from the Volta Lake.
Mr. Gonu reiterated that the central government as a matter of emergency must tackle the flood situation as a security issue, with respect to the havoc and the insecurity of the affected communities and lives to forestall this happening again going into the future.
He is of the view that, though the government is going through financial challenges, there is a need for the government to call on experts and engineers in the sector to come out with a strategy to dredge parts of the Volta Lake, to allow the water level to come down and a passageway it can help the excess water have a way into the sea.
