A lot of journalists and media houses have suffered a lot of attacks from the sponsored New Patriotic Party (NPP) thugs for the past six years.
The country’s record on press freedom has been under threat under the leadership of President Nana Addo for the past seven years.
The recent attack by NPP thugs on the UTV live show programme was very unfortunate and upfront to press freedom. The Communication officer of the Shai-Osudoku constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dennis Adjannor Nartey said this on the Simpieso political show programme on Ahotor FM 92.3 in Accra.
He said is very unfortunate today NPP as a government in power cannot accommodate criticism from NPP communicators on our radio and TV networks, this he said forms part of our public discourse for freedom of expression on issues of national development.
Speaking on the same political programme, Ahmed Agbenyadzi Akuapem North Youth Organiser of NDC is of the view that, there is a need for all media houses all over the country to look at their security structures to protect their staff and property going into the 2024 elections.
He said media freedom is under threat under the NPP government, more especially where the police institution has compromised in executing their duties in delaying prosecution of these thugs that are causing attacks against journalists and media houses in the country.
He said the reality of corruption and severe economic hardship, youth unemployment is what the government must focus on. Using intimidation tactics will not help the government in these difficult times where the NPP’s performance for the past years in government cannot be accounted for in their litanies of political campaign promises.
