Michael Gambon, the Irish actor famous for playing Professor Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter movies, has passed away.
The actor’s family revealed on Thursday, September 28, 2023, that he had passed away after battling pneumonia.
Clair Dobbs, the publicist of the actor, announced in a statement to CNN that the actor passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family in the hospital. The family of Gabon requested privacy to grieve.
The statement read, “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
During his career that lasted for four decades, Gambon had various roles, but he is commonly recognized for his depiction of Professor Albus Dumbledore. He assumed this legendary role for six of the eight Harry Potter films, succeeding Richard Harris who played the character in the initial two movies after his passing in 2002..
Throughout his career, Gambon has achieved numerous accolades, including two Emmy nominations and four BAFTA wins. In 2012, the British Independent Film Awards acknowledged his exceptional career contributions to British cinema by awarding him the Richard Harris Award. In 1998, he was bestowed with a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth.
He will be deeply missed, and may his soul rest in peace.
