Jamaica Root Reggae musician Kerida Johnson known as Hempress Sativa has made an eye-opening statement about the lifestyle lessons Jamaica could learn from Ghana.
Speaking with Obaapa Janee on Ahotor FM today, July 4th, 2024, sharing her observations after visiting Ghana and mentioned that Jamaicans could benefit from Ghana’s approach to peacefully resolving conflicts through dialogue and unity, contrasting it with the tendency for conflict in Jamaica.
“Jamaica has a lot to learn from Ghana in terms of their lifestyle,” Hempress Sativa stated during an interview. “We Jamaicans often find ourselves in conflict and division, but in Ghana, I saw a level of peace and togetherness that we could truly benefit from.”
According to her, her journey to Ghana was filled with moments of deep connection and learning. She was warmly welcomed by Ghanaians, and spending time and engaging with some of them made me believe that Ghanaians coexist, despite their diverse backgrounds.
“In Ghana, people live together in peace and respect,” she observed. “They have a strong sense of community and a commitment to resolving conflicts amicably. This is something we need to embrace in Jamaica.”
The artist’s visit included a tour of historic landmarks, such as Kwame Nkrumah Museum and botanical gardens among others which offered a poignant reminder of the shared history between Africa and the Caribbean.
She added that genuine warmth and cooperation defined daily life in Ghana. Hempress was particularly inspired by the role of traditional practices and communal rituals in maintaining harmony.
“There’s a respect for traditions and a collective spirit that binds people together,” she explained. “It’s a powerful reminder that we are stronger when we stand united.”
Hempress Sativa’s statement is a call to action for Jamaicans to reflect on their societal dynamics.
“We need to look at how we can foster a more peaceful and cooperative environment in Jamaica,” she urged.
“By learning from Ghana’s example, we can create a society where love and unity prevail over conflict and division.”
The reggae artist’s visit to Ghana has left a lasting impact on her, and she hopes her experiences will inspire others to seek out and embrace the values of peace and community.
“Our journey towards a better future begins with understanding and learning from each other,” she concluded.
