Back in the day, relationship issues were solved amicably between partners, family, the church, or in extreme cases traditional leaders. In recent times, the trend has changed. Statistics show that relationship issues are one of the highest causes of homicides. Divorce cases have shot up to the roof, so many inmates are in jail with cases relating to relationships and marriages.
In the space of 3 months, seven different cases have been reported of spousal murder. On April 20th, 2023 a police inspector gunned down his girlfriend at Adum Kumasi on suspicion of cheating. Jealous boyfriend who killed his girlfriend with building blocks at Dunkwa over a misunderstanding of her WhatsApp status post this happened May 1st. On the 2nd of May, an abusive husband slaughters his wife and inflicts Cutlass wounds on his father-in-law at Nungua. Then the man killed his wife in the presence of their 2 years old son.
An SHS girl got stabbed to death by her barber boyfriend and a man who killed his wife over a divorce threat. Just this week at Koforidua Trom, a man killed his wife and reported himself afterward as 2 other cases of spousal murder.
It is important that as a country and society, we address these senseless killings.
Everyone has a part to play in this issue as it involves all of us, the church, parents, society, gender Ministry, and various NGOs of women empowerment.
The alarming rise in spousal killings demands immediate attention from all sectors of society. By examining the root causes, seeking expert advice, engaging religious institutions, improving family dynamics, and fostering community.
