‘Akufo-Addo’s defense of Akonta Mining an abuse of his office – Political Analyst

A Political Analyst, Nana Osei Piesie Anto has said, President Nana Addo Danquah has abused his office by the comments he made about Akonta Mining on its alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in the country.

He described comments as worrying and very unfortunate which could hinder ongoing investigations into the company’s operations.

“The matter is already under investigation and so why would the president make such comments?” he quizzed.

“This is an abuse of office, we must not condone such things in the country. Seperation of Powers, which is the pivot of democracy must be allowed to take it’s course” he added.

Nana Osei Piesie made this known Thursday, January 5, 2023 in an interview with Citizen Kofi Owusu on Adekye Mu Nsem airborne on Ahotor FM in Accra.
President Nana Addo has absolved Akonta Mining from any wrong doing, saying that the company was not involved in any illegal mining activities anywhere in the country.

He was addressing the Catholic Bishops Conference and 16th Biennial Congress of the National Union of Ghana Catholic Diocesan Priests Association in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
According to the President, the firm is not engaged in any illegality presently.

“I want to assure you all that Akonta Mining is not engaged in any form of illegal mining anywhere in Ghana as we speak,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

Meanwhile, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, convenor for Media Coalition Against Galamsey has indicated that, state institutions mandated to supervise mining activities in the country have already confirmed the company’s involvement in the act – hence the President’s defense is untenable.
