Former defender of the Ghana Stars, Joe Addo has said that there is more to captaincy than just an armband. Addo, who was a one-time captain of the Ghana national team claimed that being a captain entails a lot and is not just about wearing a band.
” I think being a captain is not just about wearing a band. Wearing a band is just a symbol. They need somebody to toss a coin and choose the side that is what the armband does. The armband does not signify anything. What a captain should have is leadership qualities, somebody who can lead a team”
He further explained that one must not be the oldest in the team but must be a leader.
“You don’t have to be the oldest player or the best player to be a captain. You need to have leadership qualities, somebody who can lead a team and that is what I think we are losing now.”
The former revealed that captains must be chosen based on the leadership qualities they possess and their ability to lead a team.
”Rather than giving captaincy to older players in a team, we have to look for someone who can lead, who can galvanize players when we are down. Somebody who the players can look up to when things are not going on well, somebody who can speak well, is not about English but someone who can stand in front of the players and talk to them. Somebody that the players can rely on you know. That is how we choose leaders. We don’t choose leaders because they are big players or play for a big club or are consistent in a national team, you choose leaders because you feel they can lead,” Addo concluded.
