GHAMRO board dissolved by court order; 5 interim directors named to run affairs – CEO confirms

The management of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) has confirmed to that the Accra High Court has nullified the elections organized by the management on March 15, 2022.

Some aggrieved members took the organisation to court over the mandate of the Board and the Election Process.

After one year of case follow-ups, the court ruled in favour of the organization in February 2022, paving the way for board elections on 15 March 2022.

These aggrieved members led by Steven Boahene appealed against the decision which the court ruled to set aside the newly elected board members on Tuesday 19th July, 2022 pending the determination of the substantive matter.

Apparently, the management of GHAMRO disregarded an interlocutory injunction pending a resolution to a suit following the organization of an Emergence General Meeting (EGM) contrary to the GHAMRO Constitution by the same management, after the four-year term of the previous Board also led by Rex Omar expired.

The management of GHAMRO was fined two thousand Ghana cedis (GHC2,000.00).

Given the numerous calls for change amidst the general dissatisfaction expressed by the GHAMRO members of the Rex Omar-led Board, this ruling offers the only music collective management organization (CMO), an opportunity to bring in fresh faces and ideas to restructure and streamline its operations for the benefit of all its’ members.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Ahotor Fm’s Midmorning show dubbed Ahotor Mmre with the Chief Executive Officer of GHAMRO, Mr. Abraham Adjatey, he disclosed that A 5-member team has taken over the management of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) for the time being.

“We are a law-abiding institution and must follow the law. So on that note, I have immediately informed the board, and I am informing you, that the Board has been set aside,” he told ObaaPa Janee on Ahotor Mmmre.

“In tandem with the corporate governance process, management has taken over the running of the society. It also means that the interim directors under whose watch the election was held, will take over the running of the society until we go to court on 11th August 2022,” he added.

The 5-member team is made up of Augustina Addison, Abraham Kofi Boakye, Diana Hopeson, Ahmed Banda, and Rex Omar.

Captain Adjatey appealed to Radio and Tv stations, Bars, Night clubs’ operators to acquire a license before playing songs by Ghanaian Artists as refusal to do that is against the laws of the country.
