Billionaire Motsepe now Africa’s Soccer Chief

South African Billionaire Dr. Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe has been confirmed the new President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) by popular acclamation  on friday.

At the 43rd CAF General Assembly today in Rabat, Morocco, Motsepe was acclaimed president after all his competitors withdrew their candidature and now occupies Vice Presidential positions.

Patrice Motsepe who becomes the seventh President of CAF and is the eighth richest African according to Forbes and the owner of South African giant Mamelodi Sundowns.

Jacques Onouma of Ivory Coast, Augustin Senghor of Senegal and Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania all withdrew from the race and his predecessor Ahmad Ahmad was barred from running.

In his address, Motsepe said ” I want to emphasize there is a sense of extreme urgency, a sense of urgency to get going. Part of that is clearly a need to make sure we stabilize our finances. We need to make sure we stabilize the financial position of CAF and put it in a significantly more healthy position.”

In the new arrangements by CAF, there are now five Vice presidents instead of the initial three with DR Congo’s Constance Omari occupying the 1st Vice President position.

1st Vice – Augustin Senghor from Senegal 
2nd Vice – Ahmed Yahya from Mauritania 
3rd Vice – Souleiman Waberi from Djibouti 
4th Vice – Fouzi Lekjaa from Morocco 
5th Vice – Amaju Pinnick from Nigeria

Mustapha Raji (liberia) – West A
Seidou Mbombo Njoya (cameroon)- Central
Djibrilla Hamidou  – West B Souleiman Waberi  – Central East

FIFA Council members elected today are

Hany Abou Rida – Egypt 
Fouzi Lekjaa  – Morocco 
Amaju Pinnick – Nigeria
Mamoutou Toure – Mali  
Mathurin De Chacus – Benin
Aisha Johansen – Sierra Leone.

The new CAF and  FIFA Council are representatives from Africa for the next four years.
