The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ablekuma Central, Mr. Frank Nkansah, has raised concern over the persistent misuse of public dustbins, describing it as a major setback to sanitation efforts in the municipality.
In an interview with the media, Mr. Nkansah disclosed that dustbins strategically placed at vantage points to promote cleanliness are frequently removed by residents and taken to their homes. According to him, some residents repurpose the bins for fetching and storing water, rather than using them for waste disposal as intended.
He explained that the practice has made effective waste management difficult, as public dustbins often go missing shortly after being installed. The MCE noted that the disappearance and misuse of the bins encourage indiscriminate dumping of refuse and undermine the Assembly’s ongoing sanitation and environmental health campaigns.
Mr. Nkansah emphasized that sanitation is a collective responsibility and urged residents to change their attitudes towards public property. He cautioned that the Assembly will intensify the enforcement of sanitation by-laws after the Christmas festivities, warning that individuals found misusing public waste bins or engaging in improper waste disposal will be arrested and prosecuted.
