Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies made a winning start to their CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying campaign after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas on Monday.
Gloria Adomako proved to be the difference between the two sides, scoring the decisive goal in the 29th minute. The forward rose highest to meet a well-delivered cross and directed her header into the net to give the Ghanaian champions the lead.
ASEC Mimosas came out with greater attacking intent after the break as they searched for an equaliser, but Ampem Darkoa Ladies remained disciplined and well organised defensively.
The Ghanaian champions stood firm under pressure and successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle to claim a crucial three points from their opening fixture.
Goalkeeper Rose Baah was instrumental in the victory, producing a composed and assured performance to deny the Ivorian side and preserve Ampem Darkoa’s clean sheet. Her impressive display earned her the Player of the Match award.
The victory provides Ampem Darkoa Ladies with a strong early boost as they continue their quest to progress from the qualifying tournament and earn a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League group stage.
