Military brutality in Garu is an act of terrorism – Dr. Thomas Anaba

The degree of military brutality the country has met to about 205 people in the Garu community in the Upper East Region is an admission that the soldiers have turned the civilian population in the Northern part of the country into terrorists.

The degree of the incident that leads to the assault on the entire community in search of guns in a country where the rule of law works, depicts a leadership failure on the part of the President and the Military high command.

The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Garu Dr. Thomas Anaba said this on Adekye Mu Nsem’s morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM and hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.

He said the leadership of the country is out of control, looking at the degree of intelligence and security lapses in the invents that lead to the brutality of the people in Garu, under minds our chain of command in the hierarchy of National Security and the military.

He decried that, working on strange information within the community been reported by the civilian who was showing concern about the directives from the National Security “see something and say something” was under mind by the unsuspected military officers to create fear and panic and further brutalized the people is very unfortunate and unfounded.

Dr. Thomas Anaba said, that currently, about 205 civilians are in the hospital going through care and medication with lots of cuts, bleeding, and bruises from the assaults from the military officers, which is unfortunate and uncivilized.

He is of the view that a similar incident happened in Ashiaman and now Garu, there is a need for the government and the chain of command from the military to carry out an investigation into this incident and come out with a report and the culprit must be punished to serve as a deterrent to others.

He further reiterated that the border relationship between the people of the Garu community and the families along the Togo border helps a lot with intelligence information gathering on terrorism, and anything unusual in the area will always attract community attention; he cannot understand why the military cannot respect the law of the country by using due process to addressed anything untoward in their operations rather vent anger of brutality on the community members.

This he believes will go further in lowering our human rights rating and likely undermine our democratic credentials as a peaceful country where the rule of law works.
