The Ghana Grid Company has cut power amid flooding in Sogakope and it’s environs. The ongoing spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams has led to severe floodings along the volta river.
The overflow of water from the dam has led to the displacement of hundreds of individuals in the Mepe, Battor and other areas of the three Tongu District in the Volta Region.
Currently, more than 500 households are grappling with the inundation as residents desperately attempt to salvage their belongings.
The floods have already claimed properties valued at thousands of Ghana Cedis, including numerous buildings.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) is conducting this spillage due to a “consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo dam.”
Most of the residents who said they lost their properties are currently homeless and appealing to the government to come to their aid.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) says, it has began distribution of some relief items to some affected communities.
The Deputy Director General of NADMO, Seji Saji disclosed in an interaction with the media that, “the information from VRA indicates that this situation must persist for about a week or two. The inflows are heavy now and they think in about two or a week, they would have reduced the spillage.
Our teams are still going on with assessment but as we speak we have relief items in those districts serving those people who have moved to safe haven” he added.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for South Tongu, Kobena Mensah Woyome has called on government to release the MPs common fund to enable him provide some reliefs for his constituents.
