The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on the security agencies to carry out their duties within the boundaries of the law.
This comes in the wake of the arrest and reported brutal treatment of some individuals who participated in the 3-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.
The Police on Thursday arrested a total of 49 suspects in connection with an unlawful assembly and violation of the Public Order Act.
According to a statement issued by the Police Service in Accra “the 49 suspects, who were arrested, are assisting in the investigation and have been released. These suspects were arrested within the vicinity of the Jubilee House and the 37 Military Hospital area”.
The arrest was a result of the flagrant disregard of the court process served on the organizers of the Democracy Hub group, which seeks to prohibit them from embarking on a planned demonstration within the vicinity of the Jubilee House from Thursday, 21st to Saturday, 23rd September 2023.
The police indicated that it does not take delight in preventing any group from demonstrating as the Service has a track record of providing security for demonstrations in the past.
The NCCE criticized the actions of the police and emphasized that such actions are unacceptable.
The chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education NCCE Catherine Addy also urged the public to refrain from provoking security agencies while exercising their right in the course of their duty.
