Some disgruntled members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region on Tuesday locked up the party’s regional offices in Kumasi in what they termed as a “revolution in the party,” following the defeat in the 2016 elections.
They used padlocks and chains to lock up the Regional party office at Afful Nkwanta in Oforikrom.
Their anger is that, the party’s leadership did not prosecute the 2016 campaign well which caused them the defeat to the New Patriotic Party (NDC).
In a radio interview on Asempa FM’s ‘Ekosii Sen’ programme, Yakubu Tony Aidoo specifically accused Mr Ohene Agyekum whom they said was too old for the campaign and the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Andy Okrah of not helping the cause of the party in the region.
They said Mr Okrah despite his position as campaign coordinator in the region pocketed party funds that were made available to him and only organised press conferences to parade people whom he claimed had defected from the NPP to the NDC.
Tony Aidoo and his team after locking up the party offices in the morning went back in the afternoon when they heard it had been re-opened.
The party’s security however prevented them from carrying out their action for the second time.
He told Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong (KABA), host of the Ekosii Sen programme that he had initiated a “coup d’ etat” in the NDC and that after the “revolution” they will restore “democracy”.
On the appointment of Mr Ohene Agyekum for instance as a national campaign member, Yakubu claimed they cautioned the party’s leadership on the move, but they ‘brushed’ them aside since he was not a “graduate of political science.”
He mentioned Barbara Asamoah as an example of Ministers from Ashanti who lost touch with their constituents [in Offinso] since she did not visit them and only stayed in Accra.
