World Polio Day 2023: A Global Pledge to Eradicate Polio

As we observe World Polio Day on October 24, 2023, the world comes together to acknowledge the vital mission of eradicating polio, celebrate the remarkable progress made in global efforts, and advocate for ongoing vaccination campaigns to wipe out this disease worldwide.

Understanding Polio

Poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, is a highly contagious disease that primarily affects young children, particularly those under the age of five. The virus spreads through the “fecal-oral route,” which means it can be transmitted when germs from feces come into contact with the mouth, often through contaminated food or water. This transmission route has the potential to lead to limb paralysis.

Polio doesn’t discriminate, and its early symptoms include fever, fatigue, headaches, vomiting, neck stiffness, and limb pain. In severe cases, it can result in permanent paralysis. Individuals in regions with inadequate sanitation face a higher risk of contracting polio.

Preventing polio primarily involves vaccination, improved sanitation, and personal hygiene. Parents and caregivers play a pivotal role in ensuring their children receive the full schedule of vaccinations.

We strongly encourage the general public to practice good personal and environmental hygiene. The practice of open defecation should be discontinued, and the use of appropriate toilet facilities is highly recommended.

A Call to Action

For the safety and well-being of our children, it is essential for parents to vigilantly monitor any signs of polio in their children and promptly report them to the nearest healthcare facility for immediate medical attention.

District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Assemblies play a vital role in enforcing sanitation regulations to safeguard our communities.

 Shared Commitment:

On this World Polio Day, we invite you to join us in committing to these essential measures for polio prevention. Let’s collaborate to ensure that the health and welfare of our children and communities remain a top priority.

Together, we can create a world where polio is but a memory, and where every child has the chance to grow up healthy and happy, free from the threat of this debilitating disease. Our collective efforts can and will make a difference.
