New LI not seeking the interest of Ghanaians- Murtala Mohammed

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has said, new LI to ban the importation of about 21 products in the country is not seeking the interest of Ghanaians.

According to him, that decision do not have the interest of Ghanaians and businesses at heart.

“The decision taken by the Minister to impose this LI on the people of this country has nothing to do with trade liberalization, it has nothing to do with helping importers, it has nothing to do with generating revenue for this country, the only thing it is seeking to do is to line the pocket of the Minister for trade.

The Minority in Parliament still stand at their position not accept the Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that aim to prohibit the importation of rice, sugar, and 20 other “strategic products.”

According to the proposed regulation, individuals interested in importing the specified products would require authorization from the Trade Minister, Kobina Tahir Hammond, who supports the regulation, has expressed optimism that it will lead to the appreciation of the cedi and the development of local industries.

However, Mr Murtala in an interview on ‘Adekye Mu Nsem’ with Citizen Kofi Owusu airborne on Ahotor FM criticized the regulation, calling it a harmful policy that do not have the interest of Ghanaians at heart.

“…there is nothing wrong with any minister seeking to generate revenue to fund activities of the ministry for the good of the country because every ministry had what they call Internal Generated Fund (IGF) but our concern is that, it will be used to witch-hunt if you like business men who are not NPP members” he said.
