Mobile money (MoMo) transactions in Ghana soared to a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, per the Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data.
This peak underscores digital wallets as the powerhouse of the nation’s retail economy, driven by Christmas and New Year spending. Volumes jumped to 982 million from 892 million in November.
Key ecosystem growth highlights include:
Active accounts: Rose to 26.7 million from 25.5 million.
Total registered accounts: Hit 80.5 million milestones.
Wallet balances: Reached 2025 high of GH¢39.6 billion, reflecting strong trust in digital savings.
MoMo dwarfed traditional options: cheques managed just GH¢37.3 billion, while GhIPSS Instant Pay hit GH¢73.3 billion.
Analysts credit smartphone growth, 491,000 active agents, and interoperability (up to GH¢5.8 billion in cross-network transfers). These factors position MoMo as Ghana’s retail payment backbone, pushing toward a cash-lite future for everything from micro-payments to big commerce.
