GRIDCo Working to Restore Power After Akosombo Substation Fire

A major fire incident at the Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region has disrupted electricity supply to parts of Ghana, the Ghana Grid Company Limited has confirmed.

According to a press statement issued on April 23, 2026, the fire broke out at approximately 2:01 p.m., affecting operations at the critical power transmission facility.

The substation, located in Akosombo, plays a vital role in distributing electricity across the national grid.

GRIDCo indicated that the incident has led to interruptions in power supply in several areas, although the full extent of the impact is still being assessed.

Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the scene and are working intensively to contain the situation and restore normal operations.

“The technical teams are actively managing the situation, and every effort is being made to stabilise the system and minimise disruptions,” the statement assured.

Authorities say a comprehensive evaluation is underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage to infrastructure.

Restoration efforts are expected to begin as soon as preliminary assessments are completed.

GRIDCo has urged the public to remain calm, emphasizing that the situation is under control and that further updates will be communicated as more details emerge.
