Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Dumelo is celebrating a major milestone in agricultural development after witnessing the fruits of an initiative he encouraged last year.
Taking to social media, Dumelo revealed that he had previously urged farmers in the Upper East Region to venture into tomato farming during the dry season — a move aimed at boosting local production and reducing dependence on imports.
During a recent visit to the region, he expressed joy at seeing acres of tomatoes ready for harvest, describing the development as a sign of progress and resilience among hardworking Ghanaian farmers.
According to him, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture remains committed to supporting the farmers as they prepare to expand operations ahead of the 2027 dry season. He reiterated that government backing would help scale up production and strengthen the region’s agricultural output.
Dumelo also shared a bigger vision behind the initiative — reducing the number of trucks that travel to Burkina Faso to purchase tomatoes. He expressed hope that by this time next year, those trucks would instead be sourcing tomatoes directly from farmers in the Upper East Region.

His post has sparked conversations online about food security, import reduction, and the importance of investing in local agriculture. Many supporters praised the initiative as a practical step toward empowering farmers and strengthening Ghana’s agricultural economy.
As tomato harvests increase and expansion plans take shape, the Upper East Region could soon position itself as a key hub for dry-season tomato production — a development that blends policy, passion, and purpose.
