Xavi Hernández has been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands men’s national team, with the Royal Dutch Football Association formally confirming the decision on Wednesday.
The 46-year-old Spanish coach, a legendary former midfielder and World Cup winner with Spain, takes over from Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the Oranje’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the round of 32 at the hands of Morocco.
Xavi has reached an agreement with the KNVB on a contract running through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, giving him a multi-year mandate that will also cover the 2028 European Championship and allow him to shape a long-term project built around the Dutch side’s traditional attacking, possession-based identity.
This marks a notable return to management for Xavi after a two-year period away from the dugout following his departure from Barcelona in 2024. As a player he won four Champions League titles with Barcelona and major international honors including the 2010 World Cup and consecutive European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
He began his coaching career at Al-Sadd in Qatar, where he collected multiple trophies, before succeeding Koeman at Barcelona in late 2021 and guiding the Catalan club to the La Liga title in 2022-23 along with a Spanish Super Cup. The appointment creates an unusual parallel, as it is the second time Xavi has directly replaced the Dutchman in a high-profile role.
In statements released alongside the announcement, Xavi expressed a deep personal connection to Dutch footballing philosophy, noting the profound influence of figures such as Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels on his own development through the Barcelona academy, as well as the formative impact of Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard.
He described himself as, in a sense, a son of Dutch football and emphasized his attraction to the Netherlands’ clear vision of creative, passionate, possession-oriented attacking play. The most important objective remains winning, he said, but he prefers to achieve results in a style that reflects those characteristics and allows supporters to enjoy the football.
He looks forward to beginning the challenge alongside the players, staff, and everyone connected to the KNVB, with plans to assemble a technical team that blends his own approach with valuable Dutch knowledge of the players and culture.
The move ends a period of uncertainty for the national team after Koeman’s resignation and comes as the first foreign head coach of the Oranje since Ernst Happel in 1978. Xavi’s appointment signals an intentional alignment between the Spanish coach’s tiki-taka roots and the historic Dutch total football tradition, positioning the side for a fresh cycle aimed at success on the road to the 2030 World Cup.
