Ghana’s Black Satellites tasted a bitter 4-2 defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in their Group B opener of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship on Monday in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire. The match, staged at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, delivered an intense and high-scoring encounter that once again underscored the fierce rivalry between the two West African football powerhouses at youth level. Nigeria, the defending champions and seeking to retain their regional crown, produced a dominant first-half display and ultimately held on for a convincing victory that marks their third consecutive win over Ghana at this age-group stage.
The Flying Eagles wasted little time imposing themselves on the contest. Right-back Olayemi Ayinla set the tone early, finding the net inside the opening ten minutes to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead and inject immediate energy into the Nigerian side under new head coach Abdu Maikaba. Ghana responded with determination, and around the 20- to 23-minute mark Mohammed Zaida (also reported as Zaidan) finished clinically after good work involving captain Kelvin Nkrumah to restore parity at 1-1. The Black Satellites had been largely second-best in the opening period, struggling to contain Nigeria’s energetic attacking play and clinical finishing in key moments.
After the restart Ghana emerged with greater resolve and improved organisation. Their efforts were rewarded in the 62nd minute when captain Kelvin Nkrumah calmly converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 3-2 and briefly raise hopes of a comeback among the Ghanaian contingent. The Black Satellites produced encouraging spells of attacking football and showed fight, yet they were unable to fully capitalise on their renewed momentum. Nigeria remained solid and clinically effective. In the 90th minute Adeleke sealed the result by converting another penalty, completing his brace and making amends for an earlier one-on-one miss. The final whistle confirmed a 4-2 victory for the Flying Eagles.
The result hands Nigeria an ideal start in Group B, which also features Burkina Faso and Togo, and places them in a strong position as they pursue both the regional title and qualification for the next CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. For Ghana, the defeat represents a disappointing opening to the tournament. Despite the loss, Maxwell Konadu’s side displayed positive moments of attacking intent and will look to regroup quickly ahead of their remaining group fixtures, beginning with a crucial clash against Burkina Faso. Although Ghana has already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as hosts, the WAFU B competition remains an important platform for building cohesion, gaining competitive experience and preparing for the continental challenge ahead.
