Accra Hearts of Oak have officially confirmed the appointment of former Black Stars shot-stopper and national team goalkeepers coach Richard Kingson as their new goalkeepers coach, marking a significant and emotional homecoming for one of Ghana’s most celebrated custodians of the net.
The announcement came on Monday, July 27, 2026, via the club’s official X account, where the Phobians described the move in warmly symbolic terms: “A legend returns. From guarding the post to grooming the next generation. Welcome home, Richard Kingson, our new Goalkeepers’ Coach.” The timing aligns perfectly with the club’s broader technical overhaul ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, as Kingson slots into the backroom staff of newly appointed Serbian head coach Nebojsa Kapor, who himself has signed a two-year deal with the Rainbow Club.
At 47 years of age, Kingson—affectionately known throughout Ghanaian football as “Olele”—brings an extraordinary depth of experience that few goalkeeping coaches in the country can match. Born on 13 June 1978, he enjoyed a distinguished playing career that saw him earn 93 caps for the Black Stars between 1996 and 2012.
He was the first-choice goalkeeper during Ghana’s historic appearances at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and the 2010 tournament in South Africa, becoming a central figure in the nation’s emergence as a competitive force on the global stage. Beyond the World Cups, he represented Ghana at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, including a memorable run to the final in 2010, and his leadership and shot-stopping ability earned him widespread respect both at home and abroad.
His club career took him from the Ghanaian domestic scene, where he featured for Accra Great Olympics, to European football, most notably with Turkish giants Galatasaray—where he was known by the name Faruk Gürsoy—before spells in the English Premier League with Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Blackpool.
Those years at the highest levels of the game equipped him with technical insights and professional standards that he has since channelled into coaching. After retiring from playing, Kingson transitioned smoothly into the technical side of the game. He first served as goalkeepers coach for the Black Stars in 2017, remaining in the role until 2019.
He later returned to the national setup in 2021, working with both the senior Black Stars and the Black Stars B, and continued in that capacity until 2024. During this period he played a key part in the development of several Ghanaian goalkeepers who went on to feature at major tournaments, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Kingson’s connection with Hearts of Oak is not entirely new. In early 2021 he briefly served as the club’s interim goalkeepers trainer following a period of upheaval in the technical department, having previously gained domestic coaching experience at Great Olympics.
That earlier stint at the Phobians gave him familiarity with the club’s culture, expectations and passionate fan base.
