The Principal Dietician at the Lekma Hospital in Accra, Habiba Yussif, has cautioned Ghanaians to be mindful of both the type and quantity of food they consume, particularly during the festive season.
She noted that many people eat simply to satisfy hunger without considering the nutritional value of what they consume. Ms. Yussif stressed that every meal taken into the body serves as fuel, either promoting good health or contributing to disease. “Once food enters the body, you have no control over its effects. The only control is what you put on your plate,” she explained.
The dietician observed that during parties and social gatherings, where food is often served buffet-style, people tend to overload their plates with multiple carbohydrate-heavy options such as waakye, rice, and other starchy meals. She warned that such eating habits can be harmful, particularly for people who are physically inactive or living with chronic health conditions.
She therefore advised the public to make deliberate and informed food choices by ensuring that every meal contains the four essential nutrient groups—carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins and minerals to support overall health and well-being during and beyond the festive season.
