EXPAND BENEFITS PACKAGE TO COVER CRITICAL ILLNESSES – WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) URGED NHIS

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to expand its benefits package to cover critical illnesses, including kidney diseases, to bring down the cost of dialysis.
Dr. Francis Chisaka Kasolo, the WHO Country Director, said that the recent outcry over the increase in dialysis fees at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital could be addressed if the NHIS were expanded to bear the cost for patients.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines at an event in Accra, Dr. Kasolo said that a second look at the operations of the NHIS is needed.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations in Health has also supported the calls to include renal healthcare especially kidney diseases in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The Greater Accra regional chairman of the Ghana Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations in Health Freeman Khanton made the position of the group known in an interview with Ahotor News.
