The Akosombo dam is a thoughtful and visionary architecture strategic national asset constructed by the founder and the first president of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah for economic and industrial development.
This strategic asset has served the Volta and the Eastern region at the lower part of the river for agriculture and employment through the industrial revolution in the past years through the hydropower supply and large commercial farming in Asutuari rice farm, Accra plains, and Kpong rice irrigation farm.
The recent flood disaster can be described as our own creation of problems through negligence on the part of technical and engineers at the Volta River Authority.
The former Member of Parliament for Madina Amadu Bugari Sorogho stated this on Adekyee Mu Nsem on Ahotor 92.3 FM in Accra and hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu.
He is of the view that President Akufo-Addo’s handling of the emergency about 2, 600 people are going through, lacks national attention from the state in providing a settlement and dredging plans to pump the wasted water from the catchment area where the affected people were living.
He opined that barely ten days now, after the spillage there is no State of the Nation address from the president through the media or any dairy broadcast on the update on the emergency plan from the committee put in place to come out with the national strategic plan going forward to forestall this happening in the near future.
Amadu Bugari Sorogho reiterated that the president’s comments and response to the huge losses of property and investment especially on settlement are not forthcoming.
In addition, any investment package for people who lost their capital in fish farming and the hospitality industry expectations are fixed without any hope and sustainable plans for the future from the government.
In his opinion, he believes the president’s authority as the father of the land is just for some regions and not the people from the Volta region.
Since the flood disaster can be considered as technical incompetence he thought the president had to pay special attention to this national disaster by seeking a lot of assistance from both local and international to bring life back to the affected people.
