The government and all its allied institutions working on welfare and development issues must be very proactive in responding to the needs of Ghanaians in this challenging time; where climate change adverse disaster the global community is going through a call for effective political leadership and planning.
Dr. Julius Kattah Fellow, Chartered Economist (ICEG-Ghana) discloses this on Adekyee Mu Nsem’s morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM in Accra hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu.
He is of the view that the lessons the Volta River Authority and Metrological Authority must learn is to collaborate and be proactive in all activities that have to do with the weather and nature to plan and learn from the past to discourage the havoc caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
Dr. Julius Kattah Fellow, Chartered Economist, stated that VRA as an institution has been carrying out spillage which dates back to sixty years ago, and proactive measures on settlement, education, and other emergency calls do not go down well with the people who are suffering from the spillage to move safe place.
He opined that there is a need for holistic national planning on disaster management that will encompass all the agencies on relief, rescue, and settlement to prevent these huge economic losses of property and livelihood for thousands of people along the river banks depending on the river downstream for hospitality business and fish farming.
Speaking on the same issue on the Adekye Mu Nsem morning show, Hon. Kwesi Poku Bosompem, decried how unfortunate the disaster has turned into political space for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) to score political points where people are going through pains and discomfort for the loss of assets and properties through the spillage of the Dam.
He reiterated that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s engagement with the affected community in the Southern part of the Volta region was not politically right. He believes as the first gentleman of the land he should have empathized with the people, by encouraging them with hope and assurance on the urgent response to their plight.
He descended on the media, by trying to over-politicize the disaster, which he believes needs a national call to mobilize resources from all quarters from the companies and citizens to respond to the needs of the affected communities.
He calls for proper planning going into the future to forestall this disaster which is now eating into the national budget. He further promised to rally around within the Tema enclave to raise support and relief items in partnership with Ahotor FM for the affected communities from the spillage.
