The Member of Parliament for Madina Hon. Francis Xavier Sosu has sent a bill to parliament seeking the extension of maternity leave. Per the current constitution, one is expected to go for three months maternity leave which is not helpful to both the lactating mother and the baby.
Based on this the MP for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu has presented a bill to parliament seeking at least four months maternity leave.
The bill when approved by parliament, will amend the Labour Act 2003 Act 651 which talks about the duration of maternity leave. Again the bill sought to seek an additional two weeks for the woman if she undergoes cesarean section (CS), stillbirth, and multiple births incur an additional two weeks.
The bill is seeking paternity leave of seven days or a month which will enable men to extend a helping hand to their spouse after delivery and also promote exclusive breastfeeding.
