Court Clears Road for Daddy Lumba’s Final Farewell Amid Family Disputes

The  Accra High Court has lifted the injunction that temporarily blocked the funeral of Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba, clearing the way for the ceremony to take place tomorrow, Saturday, December 13.

The legal restraint—initiated by Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu—stemmed from a GH¢2 million demand he placed on the musician’s maternal family. With the family unable to meet the deadline for the payment, the court overturned the injunction, giving organisers full permission to proceed with preparations.

Daddy Lumba’s passing did not come without controversy. In the days following his death, several conflicting reports emerged regarding the circumstances leading up to it.

While the immediate family insisted on privacy as they navigated the emotional period, extended family disagreements broke into the public space. There were claims of misunderstanding over who had authority over funeral arrangements, who held traditional rights, and who should be consulted before announcements were made.

Some family members also alleged they were left out of key decisions regarding Daddy Lumba’s medical care in his final days, leading to tension between the paternal and maternal sides. These unresolved disputes eventually spilt into the courts, culminating in the high-profile injunction that threatened to delay his final rites.

Many fans feared that the disagreements and legal battles would overshadow his legacy—a legacy filled with timeless music, groundbreaking performances, and decades of cultural influence.

With the court issues now settled, organisers are racing to put the final touches on what is expected to be one of the most emotional and star-studded funerals in recent memory.

Musicians, industry leaders, and admirers from all corners of the world are expected to gather to pay homage to the man whose voice shaped Ghana’s musical identity.
