Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, the Deputy Director of Elections handling I.T. for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for its handling of the missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs), calling their actions into question.
He expressed concern over the EC’s silence regarding the disappearance of the BVDs before the NDC brought it to light, stressing that it raises alarms for the upcoming 2024 elections.
Dr. Computer accused the EC of attempting to cover up the situation by arresting individuals and asserted that the NDC has reached out to several embassies to monitor the EC’s conduct, fearing it could threaten the nation’s peace during the elections.
In response to the missing BVDs, five EC officials have been suspended pending investigations into their suspected involvement in the theft.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, revealed these suspensions while updating the public on the situation. He stressed the importance of involving law enforcement to conduct thorough investigations and affirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring justice and holding accountable those responsible for stealing government property.
Earlier, the EC denied claims by the Minority in Parliament regarding the disappearance of seven BVDs. The Minority Caucus had urged the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to swiftly investigate the alleged theft.
Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer expressed distrust in the EC’s actions leading up to the 2024 elections, stating that the NDC cannot rely on them.
