Forward Mavis Owusu’s 72nd minute header was enough for the Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa to to beat Togolese side Athleta FC in the final Group B clash of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone-B Champions League qualifier at the Stade d` INHP, Yamoussoukro on Sunday.
The victory was the second for the Ghanaian contingent, having earlier defeated Burkinabe fold, Sportive des Forces Armées 3-0 in the first game, a hard-earned goalless draw against Nigerian giants Bayelsa Queens before earning a narrow 1-0 victory over Athleta.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies will now face off with Ivorian side African Sports d’ Abidjan in the semi-final ahead of the second edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League which will be staged in Morocco later this year.
The Ghanaian contingent started brightly and dominated play with good chances in the first half but the Togolese side kept their calm and denied Ampem Darkoa from getting a goal.
Back from recess, Ampem Darkoa stepped up their play but we denied an opportunity to take the lead in the 70th minute when referee waved play to continue after Mavis Owusu was heavily brought down in the penalty box.
Not ready to settle on a draw, Elizabeth Owusua replaced Mary Amponsah and finally the deadlock was broken minutes later.
Forward Mavis was right at the spot to head home from Constance Agyemang’s corner kick to register her second of the tournament as they held on to their lead.
