Sammy Kuffour warns Ghana must address deep-rooted issues ahead of World Cup 2026

Former Ghana defender Sammy Kuffour has delivered a strong warning about the current state of the Black Stars, insisting the national team risks falling further behind if long-standing issues are not urgently addressed.

Kuffour, who represented Ghana at the country’s maiden appearance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, expressed concern over what he described as a growing lack of confidence, tactical identity, and belief within the squad.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, the former defender warned that the team’s struggles could worsen if corrective measures are not taken.

“It will get to a point, we cannot win against any country if we don’t fix things,” he said.

Kuffour also pointed to the psychological pressure surrounding the national team, suggesting players appear burdened by fear and uncertainty before matches.

“Now, when you’re going to the stadium, you feel the pressure even before you leave,” he added.

His comments arrive at a crucial period as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Ghana Football Association recently appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach following the departure of Otto Addo, a decision that has generated widespread discussion among supporters and pundits.

Despite questioning certain tactical decisions in recent games — including the use of a back-three system against Comoros — Kuffour urged Ghanaians to rally behind the new coach in the interest of stability and long-term progress.

Beyond the technical bench, the former FC Bayern Munich defender called for broader reforms within Ghanaian football, including improved player scouting and stronger efforts to recruit dual-nationality talents capable of strengthening the national team.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with preparations expected to intensify in the coming weeks
