President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing abandoned and stalled public projects across the country, stressing the need to ensure that taxpayers’ investments are not left to waste.
He cited the ongoing construction of a four-storey Central Laboratory Complex at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Navrongo as a key example of projects the government is determined to complete and put to productive use.
President Mahama made the remarks on Thursday, August 13, 2026, when he inspected the project as part of his #ResettingGhana Tour of the Upper East Region.
The laboratory project, which commenced in 2016 but subsequently stalled, is expected to be completed and handed over in 2027. Once completed, the facility will provide modern infrastructure to support teaching, scientific research, innovation and practical training at the university.
President Mahama said completing such projects was essential to protecting public investments and ensuring that infrastructure initiated with taxpayers’ money delivered the intended benefits to Ghanaians.
As part of efforts to improve infrastructure at UTAS, the President also directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to include the university’s request for approximately five kilometres of internal roads in its project inventory.
He described the request as achievable and emphasised the importance of providing the institution with the necessary infrastructure to support its growing academic and research activities.
President Mahama further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, describing it as critical to Ghana’s development and the preparation of young people for the demands of the modern economy.
He also expressed support for UTAS’s plans to establish a medical school, noting that the initiative could contribute significantly to expanding Ghana’s capacity to train more doctors and other health professionals.
The President’s inspection forms part of his broader tour of the Upper East Region, during which he is assessing ongoing projects, engaging stakeholders and outlining government’s plans to accelerate development and address infrastructure gaps across the region.
