Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has outlined plans to establish a Gold Board to regulate and enhance the country’s gold sector, drawing a comparison to the successful Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod).
Speaking at Prestea as part of his Western Regional tour, Mr. Mahama emphasized the need for a structured approach to managing Ghana’s gold resources, much like the board overseeing cocoa.
“If Cocoa has a Board, why can’t we have a Gold Board?” Johnn Mahama asked a large crowd of supporters.
His proposal aims to harness the full potential of the country’s gold sector, ensuring it contributes more effectively to the national economy.
He argued that the gold sector deserves the same attention and regulation that has allowed the cocoa industry to thrive.
In addition to his focus on gold, John Mahama reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to revitalizing the cocoa sector, which he believes has been neglected under the current administration.
He promised that a new NDC government would work to restore the cocoa sector to its former glory, ensuring that Ghana remains a leading global player in cocoa production.
Addressing the residents of Prestea Huni Valley, John Mahama also assured them of significant developmental projects if the NDC is elected.
“The roads in the Prestea Huni Valley enclave will be upgraded,” he promised, noting that infrastructure development in mining communities would be a priority for his administration.
John Mahama also spoke on the issue of small-scale mining, which has led to environmental degradation in some parts of the country.
He acknowledged that small-scale mining itself is not illegal but emphasized the importance of responsible mining practices.
“The destruction of land and water bodies is the issue, not small-scale mining itself,” he said.
The NDC, he assured, would implement measures to promote responsible mining, ensuring that small-scale miners can operate in a way that protects the environment and benefits the nation.
Confident in the NDC’s chances in the upcoming December 7th elections, John lMahama urged Ghanaians to reject the NPP, whose management of the economy, he claimed, has led to hardship and economic instability.
“The NPP has mismanaged the economy, and it’s time for a reset,” he declared, urging voters to use their constitutional right to vote and make a change.
John Mahama concluded with a call to action, reminding Ghanaians that the upcoming elections present a crucial opportunity to change the government and chart a new course for the nation.
“This is the right opportunity, given by the constitution, to change the government in power. Let’s seize it,” he said.
With a clear vision for the future, John Mahama’s promise to establish a Gold Board, revive the cocoa sector, and promote responsible mining practices aims to address some of the key issues facing the Western Region and the country as a whole.
