Women Are Owning the GRAMMYs’ Best African Music Performance Category

Since the introduction of the Best African Music Performance category at the GRAMMY Awards, one trend has remained remarkably consistent: only female artists have taken home the trophy.

The historic category debuted in 2024, with South African breakout star Tyla claiming the first-ever win for her global hit “Water.” The song’s international success not only pushed African pop further into the mainstream but also set a high standard for the category.

In 2025, Nigerian superstar Tems continued the streak, winning with “Love Me JeJe,” a soulful and culturally rich record that showcased her signature artistry and emotional depth.

The momentum carried into 2026, as Tyla once again made history by winning the award for “Push 2 Start,” becoming the first artist to claim the category twice—and reinforcing her dominance on the global stage.

With three editions, three wins, and all claimed by women, the category has quickly become a powerful symbol of the influence and excellence of African female artists.

As the world continues to pay closer attention to African music, one thing is clear: the women are leading the charge.
