VRA’s decision for the spillage is to protect the national asset; the dam – Issaka Kotei

Mr. Issaka Kotei, a local government expert has called on the settlers along the Volta banks, and the settlers along the Volta Lake should collaborate and be considerate with the Volta River authority in this difficult time with respect to the spillage of the water from the dam.

He is of the view that the safety of the national security asset, the Akosombo, and the Kpong Dam has to be protected, though the action taken is creating humanitarian problems causing flooding in about twenty-five communities downstream of the Volta River should be considered as the best decision to be taken at this difficult time to safe the dam.

Mr. Isaaka Kotei discloses this on Adekyee Mu Nsem’s morning show on Ahotor FM 92.3 in Accra. He reiterated that the Volta River Authority was very proactive in sending warning messages and public information to all the settlers along the river banks to move to higher lands for the past three months to save lives and property during this emergency period in controlling the excess water in the dam.

He is of the view that, going forward the VRA must help to spill the water, with a lot of consideration to help control the disaster inflicted by the control system put in place at Kpong and Akosombo to save lives and property.

In his opinion, he opined that maintaining the dams and the difficulty the people are going through the spillage have to be considered as an emergency situation. Going forward there is a need for concerted efforts from VRA and the communities along the Volta, to take the warning signals very seriously to manage the difficulty that may arise from this protection exercise from VRA, and to control the humanitarian catastrophe.
