The United Cadres Front (UCF) warmly congratulates His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for signing into law the Tribunal Bill, passed by Parliament on July 16, 2026.
This bold and decisive action represents a major step towards fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of well-meaning Ghanaians who have advocated for the reintroduction of Regional and District Tribunals to complement the traditional courts and help address the persistent backlog of cases in the country.
The UCF believes that the establishment of tribunals with jurisdiction over specific offences—including illegal mining (galamsey), tax and customs infractions, fraud, and financial losses suffered by the state—will contribute significantly to the speedy and effective administration of justice.
In particular, we are hopeful that the tribunal system will help ensure the expeditious determination of cases involving serious economic and financial offences, thereby protecting the public purse and strengthening accountability in public affairs.
We recall that the tribunal system played a significant role in promoting discipline and accountability across various sectors of Ghana’s socio-economic life during the PNDC era. While acknowledging that the system was not without its excesses and shortcomings, we recognise its contribution to dealing firmly with various forms of crime, indiscipline, and economic malfeasance.
The UCF therefore welcomes the return of the tribunal system and calls on all relevant institutions and stakeholders to ensure that the provisions of the law are applied strictly and fairly.
As Ghana embarks on this new chapter, we expect the tribunals to operate with professionalism, integrity, impartiality, and respect for due process. Justice must be administered without fear or favour, affection or ill will, let or hindrance.
The fight against corruption, economic crime, illegal mining, and other activities that undermine the state must be pursued with determination. No individual or group should be allowed to place themselves above the law.
The UCF remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote discipline, accountability, good governance, and the protection of Ghana’s national interests.
