Tema Manhean Market Women Donates to Akosombo Dam Spillage Victims

A wide range of items running into Hundreds of bags of sachet water, clothes, and wax prints, have been donated to Victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage on Friday, November 24th, 2023 at Tema Newtown Market near the Durbar grounds. The move is facilitated through Tema-based Radio station Ahotor fm 92.3 which initiated a campaign to raise funds both in kind and cash to support persons affected by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam by the Volta River Authority (VRA)

The market women who were full of delight expressed appreciation to Ahotor FM 92.3 for leading an empathetic donation drive in line with the Company’s Social Responsibility and humanitarian initiative ( CSR). Available Data by the National Disaster Management Organisation ( NADMO) shows that over twelve thousand plus (12,000) people were affected by the spillage by virtue of excess waters from the Akosombo Dam, months ago with Children being the most affected including economic activities.

Educational infrastructure and key state landmarks in the affected locations have also been severely damaged by the spillage and resultant sea waves.

Thousands of buildings were submerged and livelihoods were destroyed.

They said to the Ahotor News team that, upon hearing the drive campaign on the station they deem it appropriate to extend help to the affected communities and individuals who have been hit by the unexpected tide.

Residents of North and South, CentralTongu constituencies the communities in the periphery of the Greater Accra Region are counting losses after the Dam Spillage which destroyed thousands of properties including the destruction of livelihoods and economic activities.

Ahotor FM 92.3 is amongst leading one of the leading donors of the disaster who have gone to the rescue of victims by soliciting help from its audiences and have so far been encouraging judging from the enthusiasm which has welcomed the Donation drive since it was launched on the radio.

The Market Queen who spoke in anonymity said to Ahotor news reporter Onokwafo Yaw Asiedu that, they are willing to do more for the affected individuals and communities along the Volta Lake who suffered whenever the opportunity presents itself to lend a helping hand.

A section of individuals have similarly donated through an advertised Mobile Money Number with the Account Name: UNIVERSAL MULTIMEDIA COMPANY LIMITED in aid of the flood victims.

The Government during the Presentation of the 2024 budget and economic policy allocated Ghc220 Million to resettle over fifteen thousand people who have suffered various forms of economic deprivation as a result of the catastrophe.

The Management of Ahotor 92.3 FM in the month of November 2023, made its first phase of donation to over six thousand (6,000) affected persons as well as three hundred (300) homes which were also destroyed by the spillage. The Presentation was received by the MP for the Ada, Hon Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah on behalf of the affected residents.
