Stop This 12-year-old Marriage Immediately! – Nana Akomea To Nungua Traditional Council

Nana Akomea has strongly condemned the alarming case of child marriage reported in Nungua, where a 12-year-old girl has been betrothed to a 63-year-old Ga priest, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII.

The revelation of this marriage, purportedly conducted in the name of tradition, has sparked widespread concern and controversy. The Ga-Dangbe Council, in a statement addressing the issue, acknowledges the complexity of the situation and calls for thoughtful consideration and decisive action.

The statement highlights the concerning power dynamics and potential for exploitation inherent in such unions, particularly given the significant age difference between the parties involved. It underscores the legal and ethical implications of marrying a minor, noting the protections afforded to minors under existing laws.

In addition to legal considerations, the statement also acknowledges the societal ramifications of the traditional ruler’s actions, expressing concern over the negative impact on the reputation of the Nungua traditional area and the Ga-Dangbe community at large.

Nana Akomea, CEO of the State Transport Corporation (STC), expressed his dismay over the situation, urging immediate intervention to halt the practice of child marriage. During a media interview, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing the girl’s education and highlighted the illegality of actions that impede her schooling, including placement in a shrine for ritual purposes.

Akomea questioned the rationale behind delaying sexual intercourse until the girl reaches 18 years of age, pointing out the concerning age gap between the girl and her much older spouse. He unequivocally called for an end to such practices, labeling them as inappropriate and harmful.
