Put the debt owed by the 91 hospitals at the door step of the president — Amadu Sorogho

The staggering debt owed by 91 hospitals to Ghana’s electricity provider should be attributed to President Nana Addo Dankwa, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, and the Minister of Finance, as all operational funds for these hospitals, including revenue generation, stem from government allocations.

Addressing concerns on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, Hon. former Member of Parliament for Madina, Amadu Bukari Sorogho, emphasized the urgent need for transparency from the Ministry of Health regarding their financial operations. He urged the Ministry to clarify the disbursement of government funds for hospital operations and the outstanding amounts withheld.

However, the Ministry of Health has assured its readiness to facilitate the resolution of outstanding debts with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Sorogho attributes the looming disconnection threats from the National Taskforce of ECG to potential mismanagement and corruption within the health sector.

In response to the ECG’s stringent ultimatum, Dr. Richard Selormey, the General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, criticized the company’s three-day notice, deeming it insufficient for hospitals to settle the combined outstanding amount of GH¢261 million. He questioned the rationale behind targeting the healthcare sector, which only contributes 4.5% to ECG’s total debt.

Isaac Offei Baah, the Public Relations Officer for the Health Ministry, reassured the public of ongoing negotiations with ECG to prevent disruptions in power supply. He stressed the collaborative efforts between the government and ECG to resolve the outstanding debts.

The listed hospitals facing potential disconnection span various regions, each with substantial amounts owed, highlighting the widespread impact of the issue. It’s imperative for stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue to find viable solutions and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.
