ACCRA, Ghana, 13th October: President John Dramani Mahama has requested the Minister for Finance to allocate GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget for the construction of 250 new apartments for personnel of the Ghana Police Service.
The proposed housing project is intended to ease congestion in some police barracks and improve accommodation for officers.
President Mahama announced the initiative during the commissioning of the 85-bed Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex at the Police Hospital.
He said improving the welfare of police personnel remained a priority for his administration, adding that better housing and protection were necessary to enable officers to perform their duties effectively.
“I have requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget to construct 250 new apartments for the police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” he said.
The President explained that the proposed apartments formed part of a broader package of measures aimed at improving the working and living conditions of police officers.
He also announced that the government is expecting a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles for the Police Service in the coming weeks.
According to him, the first batch of 50 armoured vehicles was handed over to the Service in December last year to enhance operational effectiveness and improve the protection of officers.
President Mahama further disclosed that the government is procuring additional body armour for personnel deployed on operational duties.
He said the measures are intended to strengthen the capacity of the Police Service to protect the public while reducing the risks faced by officers in the line of duty.
The President stressed that the welfare of security personnel is closely linked to national security, noting that officers required adequate support to carry out their responsibilities safely and effectively.
The proposed housing allocation is expected to be considered as part of preparations for the 2027 national budget.
