President Mahama Announces GH¢200m for Completion of the Police Hospital Expansion

ACCRA, Ghana, 13th October: President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to allocate approximately GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the long-delayed Police Hospital expansion project.

The President said the government had decided to bring the 22-year-old contract to an end following prolonged disagreements with the contractor and cost overruns.

Speaking at the commissioning of an 85-bed ward at the Police Hospital, President Mahama said the government would take responsibility for completing the project and bringing it into service before the end of 2027.

“The contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end. We are going to complete it ourselves,” he said.

According to the President, the Minister for Finance has been asked to make provision for a little over GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to facilitate the completion of the project.

President Mahama said the completed expansion would add another 106 beds to the hospital, increasing its total bed capacity to more than 300.

The expanded facility is expected to include a 12-bed intensive care unit (ICU), a new accident and emergency centre, 11 consulting rooms and four paediatric consulting rooms.

It will also be equipped with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan machines, three general surgical theatres, a specialised orthopaedic theatre and an endoscopy unit.

The project will further include a mortuary with a capacity for 222 bodies.

The President said the completion of the expansion would significantly strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide healthcare services to police officers and members of the general public.

His announcement came during the commissioning of the new 85-bed block, named the Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex, which increases the hospital’s existing bed capacity to more than 200.

The government says the investment forms part of broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery and the welfare of personnel of the Ghana Police Service.
