Pong Tamale Girls’ dormitory on fire.

Pong Tamale Senior High School in Northern Ghana has experienced a fire outbreak in the girls’ dormitory, sparking concerns about fire safety in boarding schools.

The fire, which started in the washrooms, was quickly contained by firefighters from the Savelugu Fire Station, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the campus.

This incident is the latest in a series of fire outbreaks in senior high schools in the region. On February 2, a fire destroyed parts of a dormitory at Tolon Senior High School, displacing students and damaging personal belongings.

Earlier, on January 28, a major fire at the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) affected nearly 900 female students.

The recurring incidents have raised alarm among parents, education stakeholders, and the public, with calls for urgent action to improve fire safety measures in boarding institutions

Would you like to know more about the current fire safety measures in Ghanaian schools or what authorities are doing to address these incidents?
