ACCRA, Ghana, 13th October: President John Dramani Mahama has announced that construction work on the Western North Regional Hospital is set to begin following the completion of the procurement process and the handover of the project site to the contractor.
The President said the hospital is among three regional hospital projects the government had initiated this year as part of its commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in Ghana’s six newly created regions.
Speaking during a courtesy call by chiefs of the Western North Region at the Presidency, President Mahama said the contractor has taken over the site and construction was starting.
“We have completed the procurement process and handed over the site to the contractors for the regional hospital. The contractor has taken over the site, and construction work is starting on the Western North Regional Hospital,” he said.
According to the President, the government had promised to provide regional hospitals for all six new regions but decided to begin with three projects in 2026.
He said the remaining regions would undergo the procurement process in 2027, after which construction would commence.
President Mahama said the hospital project formed part of the government’s broader efforts to improve access to healthcare and address infrastructure gaps across the country.
He also announced plans to provide airstrips in regions that do not currently have airports to facilitate emergency travel and medical evacuations.
The proposed landing strips would be approximately two kilometres long and include small control offices to support aircraft operations during emergencies.
President Mahama confirmed that Western North would benefit from the initiative.
He explained that the absence of suitable landing facilities in some regions could complicate emergency situations, particularly when patients needed to be transported quickly for specialised medical care.
The President further announced plans to construct regional stadiums in areas that do not currently have such facilities, with Western North among the intended beneficiaries.
He said the Minister of Sports and Recreation is completing the procurement process for the stadium projects.
Beyond healthcare and sports infrastructure, President Mahama outlined plans for road development in Western North under the Big Push and feeder roads programmes.
He said the government had prioritised major trunk roads under the first phase of the Big Push, with additional roads expected to be considered under the second phase.
The President said the regional development projects are intended to improve public services, connectivity and economic opportunities for residents.
He urged the chiefs to continue collaborating with the government to support development in their communities.
