Police have successfully arrested the alleged gang leader and one other suspect in direct connection with the armed robbery incident that tragically resulted in the death of promising young Berekum Chelsea footballer Dominic Frimpong.
The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the horrifying attack that occurred on Sunday evening as the Berekum Chelsea team bus was returning from an away Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex in Samreboi.
During the incident, masked armed robbers blocked the road, opened fire on the bus with guns and assault rifles as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing terrified players and staff to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes for cover.
In the chaos, 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong sustained serious gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, leaving the entire Ghanaian football community in profound shock and mourning.
In a swift and coordinated operation, police intelligence officers tracked down and apprehended the two key suspects. One of them, identified as the alleged leader of the gang responsible for the robbery, sustained injuries during a tense exchange of gunfire with the officers.
He has since been stabilized and transferred to a medical facility for urgent treatment, where he is reported to be under close guard. Early indications suggest that the injured suspect has already begun cooperating with authorities, providing a confession that could further strengthen the case against the remaining members of the criminal group still at large.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public and all stakeholders that the investigation remains active and intensive, with additional personnel and crime scene experts deployed to gather more evidence.
Efforts are underway to apprehend any other individuals who may have been involved in the deadly ambush on the team bus. Authorities have emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice is served for the young footballer whose life was cut short so tragically, as well as for the safety of travelers and sports teams on Ghana’s roads.
Further details regarding the identities of the suspects, the full circumstances of the arrests, and any additional charges will be communicated to the public in due course as the probe progresses and more information becomes available.
