Heartbreaking: Elmina Sharks Keeper William John Donkoh Loses Left Leg After Cape Coast Motorbike Crash

Elmina Sharks FC goalkeeper William John Donkoh has undergone amputation of his left leg after a motorbike accident in Cape Coast, Ghana.

The Access Bank Division One club confirmed the news in an official statement on Thursday, 22 October 2026. The incident has left the club and the broader Ghanaian football community in shock.

Timeline of the incident

•  On the Sunday before the accident, Donkoh played for Elmina Sharks in a home Access Bank Division One League match against Future Stars at the Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom Sports Stadium, where he kept a clean sheet.

•  The team had a scheduled day off on Monday.

•  On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, after morning recovery training around 8 a.m., Donkoh left for home. Later that day, while riding a motorbike on a private matter—checking on contractors who had not completed work he had commissioned—he was involved in a head-on collision with a tricycle on the road leading to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

•  He sustained severe injuries to his left leg and was taken to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

•  On Wednesday night, 21 October, he underwent emergency surgery. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, doctors could not save the limb, and his left leg was amputated.

•  On Thursday, 22 October, Elmina Sharks publicly confirmed the amputation.

Club Public Relations Officer Kingsley Smith Arthur described the accident as a major blow and a huge surprise. He noted that eyewitness reports indicated a head-on collision near the hospital road.
